A pioneer of the experimental turntable movement, artist Christian
Marclay masterfully mixes visual art and music in The Sounds of
Christmas, an interactive installation/performance project that opens at
CCA on December 6 2003.

The Sounds of Christmas consists of a collection of approximately 1,200
vinyl LPs of Christmas music, 6 DVD videos, and a series of performances
by deejays/turntablists. From Bing Crosby's Christmas with Bing, to
Abbott and Costello's Christmas Stocking album, to more than 30 versions
of The Little Drummer Boy, the project incorporates music that is the
very opposite of what is considered progressive or avant-garde.
Marclay, who is interested in exploring the relationship between the
sonic and the visual, challenges DJs to reinterpret the popular seasonal
songs that have already been reinterpreted by so many musicians in the
past.

Guest DJs include DJ Mingo-Go and Guy Veal, who will create live remixes
of their own selection from the catalogued collection. These recorded
performances will then provide a continuous audio soundtrack for
visitors to the installation who will also be able to thumb through the
bins of LPs in the archive.

Christian Marclay was born in 1955 in the United States and was raised
in Switzerland. He currently lives in New York and works in a variety
of media including music, video, performance, installation, and
sculpture. He has been an influential figure in the avant-garde music
scene for more than 20 years, and has collaborated with such artists as
Sonic Youth, Elliot Sharp, and Otomo Yoshihide, among many others.

Marclay has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions, including
those at the Whitney Museum of American Art, San Francisco Museum of
Modern Art, White Cube, London and the St. Louis Art Museum. He recently
had a mid-career retrospective initiated by the Hammer Museum in Los
Angeles.
