Le Mois de la Photo Montral 2005
Call for Candidates: Artistic Director
Le Mois de la Photo Montral is searching for an Artistic Director for
the 9th presentation of the photographic biennale to open in September 2005.
Since 1989, Le Mois de la Photo Montral has been working with artists,
museums, galleries, artist-run centres, universities, and a growing family
of sponsors to present a stimulating array of exhibitions, publications,
and related events to an appreciative international audience. For the 2003
event, Artistic Director Vincent Lavoie selected work in relation to the
theme he proposed; "NOW: Images of Present Time." 25 artists from 9
countries were presented in 15 venues; in addition, there were two
thematic exhibitions. A handsome 400-page bilingual and illustrated
publication, featuring 8 commissioned essays, complemented the event. A
one-day colloquium, hosted by the Canadian Centre for Architecture, was
the centerpiece of the educational programme which also included guided
tours and artists' talks. For the 2003 event a new festival team, led by
Administrative Director, Chuck Samuels, was put in place. The office is
now closing the books on 2003 and starting to think about 2005.
Preparations for the next festival are beginning immediately and the first
thing on the agenda is the selection of a new Artistic Director. If you
are interested in presenting a proposal, please contact Administrative
Director Chuck Samuels for a detailed job description. We also invite you
to visit the Le Mois de la Photo Montral Website
(www.moisdelaphoto.com) where you can obtain information regarding the 7th
and 8th manifestations, and where a brief history of the event will be
posted in the near future.
Your proposal, due in our offices by January 15, 2004, must include the
following:
- a 2-3 page proposal for a theme;
- a cv, including bibliography;
- two published texts;
- the names and contact information for two referees who are familiar with
your work in the field.
Visual documentation of exhibitions that you have organized and a small
press dossier are also welcome.
The proposal should consider current practices in contemporary art
photography and demonstrate the theme's potential in terms of multiple
venues and events. The theme should be supported with a preliminary list
of artists. Knowledge of Quebec, Canadian, and international practice
should be demonstrated.
The Artistic Director for 2005 will have a proven curatorial track record
in international contemporary photography and a demonstrated ability to
develop an exhibition program that will have critical acclaim and public
appeal. He/she will also have an established network in international
cultural and artistic circles, as well as a strong commitment to education
and public programs. The Artistic Director should have the capacity to
create an event that will continue to distinguish Montral
internationally, and which acts as a creative and professional catalyst
for local and national artists and curators. The Artistic Director will be
a spokesperson for the 9th presentation of Le Mois de la Photo Montral
locally and international, and will build on existing relationships with
both public and private sectors.
The responsibilities of the Artistic Director will include the elaboration
of a theme, the research and selection of the works for exhibition, the
placing of the work in various venues, the supervision of the production
of a catalogue/publication, colloquium and other related activities. The
work will be executed between January 2004 and December 2005. Salary to be
negotiated.
Deadline for applications: January 15, 2004.
We reserve the right to extend this deadline if necessary.
Interviews to be conducted in early February.
The selection process to be completed by March 31, 2004.
