E m e r g e D presents [etis] :

'under the mountain'
an installation by juliana CAPES

21st _ 28th December 2003

"...can you remember stories of all the strange forces and creatures you
were told were lying dormant underneath mountains, waiting for their time to
emerge? What did they have in common with your childhood monsters under your
bed? Can you remember what it was like to be little and watch everything in
the bedroom turn to landscape with the use of a powerful imagination? What
creatures could creep in and find you there, cosseted by an impenetrable
duvet? Some could some evil but then again, some could be Santa.."

:Juliana Capes continues her research in the areas of kitsch and beauty,
striving for a balance of these two states and looking for the areas in
which they overlap. She works with a broad range of materials, enjoying the
alchemy of stuff and peculiarities of places.
juliana is an artist who has been working in Scotland since 1997. Her recent
projects include plotting the chewing gum pavement constellations on Byres
Road as part of Cabin Exchange 2003 and installing a sunset made up of
post-it notes in the Changing Room Gallery in Stirling. In the past year she
has also worked with Protoacademy in Edinburgh and is presently working with
a-n (the artists information company).
