You are warmly invited to attend a concert of digital music and live electronics performed by Martin Parker and Richard Barrett, featuring the UK premier of Barrett's M87 and Parker's joystick controlled performance system the Spectral Tourist.

The title M87 refers to one of the astronomical objects first observed and catalogued by Messier in the late 18th century. M87, it subsequently turned out, is a galaxy 60 million light years from ours, and one of the first objects posited to contain a black hole, on account of the enormous gas jet, visible through telescopes as early as 1919, which emanates from its centre. The intention of a piece like this is to extend the process of composition into the act of performance, where the "pre-composed" elements become indistinguishable from the spontaneous actions and reactions which they generate.

Martin Parker's Spectral Tourist is a reactive performance system that analyses live audio signals and stores spectral information about these signals in a database. Using the joystick as an interface, this data is traversed and brought back to life through sonic impulses and white noise. (http://www.tinpark.com)
