Vivid and Punch have joined forces to commission a practitioner based in the West Midlands to research, develop and realise a piece of work in response to the question what is urban? What is Urban? is a year-long programme of projects, initiated by Punch, to explore the meaning of the word 'urban' from urban music and fashion to urban living and renaissance. As part of this programme, Punch will commission a piece of work by a regionally based practitioner, which examines how music and urban areas are classified and categorised. Phase 1 - research and development It is proposed that artists apply to research and develop a project through Vivids haus_guest programme. The haus_guest programme offers practitioners a tailor-made residency in response to their needs. It provides an opportunity to research and develop ideas over a minimum of 5 to a maximum of 35 days within a 3-month period. Phase 2 - production On successful completion of the haus_guest programme the practitioner will be given the opportunity to undertake a further period of production at Vivid to realise the work. Phase 3 - presentation Punch and Vivid will work together in marketing and exhibiting the final project. The project will be extensively marketed through the What is Urban? programme. The commissioners will work with the artist to realise an appropriate method of disseminating the work.
