Under the title New Europe and the Balkans, Stills’ winter season runs from
17 January - 14 March 2004.
This season offers two routes to engage with the issues of an ever-enlarging Europe
an – exhibition presenting the Scottish premiere of seven contemporary artists from
Bulgaria, Croatia and Serbia, plus four weekends of Stills Specials.
On Saturday 21 February, from 3pm, join
* film maker Doug Aubrey, of legendary Pictorial Heroes Productions talking about
his cinematic experience in the Balkans in the 1990s as a ‘renegade news hound’.
* followed by an insightful tour of contemporary Romanian photography and digital
media by art critic and curator Ramona Mitrica, Director of the Romanian Cultural
Centre, London.
* we will also be launching some of the best films about the Balkans conflict:
Victims of Geography and See You in the Next War – two digital documentaries by
Doug Aubrey in Stills’ ScreenLab. Victim of Geography will be screened between
21-29 February, followed by See You in the Next War, 01-14 March at 11am, 12.45pm,
2.30pm and 4.15 pm.
* Stills’ Residents Focus Space will now be showing Friendly Frontier Patterns, a limited
edition artists' multiple and web site by Stills’ Resident Zoë Walker, in collaboration with
Neil Bromwich. This is the third Stills’ Residents work to be shown in the newly
established Stills’ Residents Focus Space and will be on view until 14 March 2004.
* Saturday 21 Feb also sees the launch of
Stills’ Front-of-House showing new short videoworks by Stills’ Residents Nicky Bird,
Jessie Blindell, Samantha Clark, Catherine Devlin, Chris Dooks, Sam Hill, Zoe Walker,
Miranda Whall, Barbara Wilson and a collaborative work by Paul Carter and Paul Gray
(Residents Co-ordinator).
For the first time Stills’ Front of-House, overlooking busy Cockburn Street, will be illuminated
by artists' video works in the twilight zone between 6-9pm, Wednesdays-Fridays,
21 February-12 March.
