Synopsis :
A radiophonic elegy to the pioneers of home recording and their forgotten enthusiasm: domestic tape recording and amateur radio in the 1960s and 70s.
* * *
Several years ago sound artist Mark Vernon bought a hoard of old reel-to-reel audio tapes as a job lot with an elderly and very heavy tape recorder from a car boot sale in Derby. Coaxing the old machine back to life and lacing the tape up, he realised he had rescued the jettisoned archive of the Derby Tape Club.
The little known phenomenon of tape recording clubs reached its peak in the 60s and 70s, as tape recording technology became more widely available. Enthusiasts would meet regularly and present recorded mixes, quizzes, documentaries and slide or cine shows to one another, swapping tips and arranging activities such as group field recording trips.
Part oral history document, part ethnographic archive, The Derby Tape Club preserves voices, accents and attitudes from a more innocent age - a radiophonic elegy to an anonymous group of people and their forgotten enthusiasm.
A LOFTUS production for BBC Radio 4
