DRIFT Radio: BOX 30/70 by O+A
21 - 27 March

Urban soundscapes produced using a length of pipe and a shipping container to 'tune' the sounds of each location. Artists O+A (Bruce Odland & Sam Auinger) placed their tuning device in Western European cities including Witten, Rotterdam, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Dresden and Vienna. Here they present recordings from their sound installation at a number of sites, plus compositions created from the sounds produced through this method at different sites, including Los Angeles and the Rocky Mountains.

BOX 30/70 is a portable audio camera obscura which visits. observes, transforms, and stores the soundscapes of European cities. It humanizes the harsh reality of the urban soundscape with a harmonic version of reality. As transformed by Odland and Auinger, extraneous noises that would normally be found disturbing acquire a basic harmonic character. By 'tuning' a site in this way, the composers subtly re-orchestrate the sonics of the city as a whole. At the same time, the altered sounds enter into a dialogue with the specific resonances of the urban space, placing its architectural and social character in an unaccustomed light.
