Sound + Vision is a collaborative thematic residency between Media &
Visual Arts (MVA) and Music & Sound at The Banff Centre. This is an
inter-disciplinary residency for visual and media artists, sound
artists, composers, musicians, theoreticians, poets, writers, rock
stars and anti-stars; exploring the intersection between visual art
and sound. Thematic residencies encompass theory and production in a
range of media. Sound + Vision is an opportunity for artists to
explore, experiment and play within the field of music, sound, popular
culture and contemporary visual and sound cultures. This unique
residency will bring together sound and visual artists to share ideas,
collaborate and produce new works. Projects might relate to:
conceptual art, minimalism, rock, rap, electro-acoustic, electronica,
theatre, film, community, performance, spoken word, hip hop, rants,
raves, art school, science, industrial, dance, demonstrating,
broadcasting, radio, noise, subcultures, subversion, resistance,
social change, recording, audio-engineering, turntablism, words,
opera, voice, identity, technology, riot grrrls, homemade instruments,
karaoke, psychology, visualization, punk, soundtracks, breathing, net
art, spoken word, sound ecology, communication theory, politics, pop
culture, television, afro-futurism, goth, DIY, low-fi, sampling,
downloading, scratching, found sound, mixed tapes, copyright,
copywrong, copyleft and more.
Criteria
The Sound + Vision residency seeks proposals for projects
demonstrating imaginative approaches to content, form, and material
concerns or proficiency. A proposal may include one or more stages of
a project, including research, development, and production. Artists
should have completed their basic training (not necessarily in a
formal educational institution), produced an independent body of work,
and received recognition of their peers through public presentation of
their work. Assessment criteria are primarily based on artistic merit
with consideration to fair representation of artistic specialization,
gender, Canada's two official languages, Aboriginal peoples, and the
various regions and cultures of Canada and the world. The Banff
Centre's ability to technically support proposed projects is
considered in adjudicating applicants. Sound + Vision will prioritize
projects that demonstrate a transformative quality and approach to
cross disciplinarity.
