Janie NICOLL

30th may - 6th june 2004

Janie NICOLL is an artist based in Glasgow. “Dead Space”, NICOLL”s installation in the vsf, employs an eye-catching swarm of flies creating a swirling comment on the raging consumerism that surrounds us. The flies are created as hand-cut laminated photographs in graduating sizes, swarming across the surface of the window, implying the presence of something rotten within.

Much of NICOLL’s work relies on the use of close up photography, repetition and digital manipulations, isolating imagery by changing its scale and context. Recent works use close up photographic images of swatted flies, blown up large, or multiplied and arranged as a multitude. The flies represent the aftermath of small everyday acts of violence on a domestic scale. These works engage with the ideas of fascination, repulsion and the need for control.

NICOLL 's practice involves site specific or installation works that use digitally enhanced photography. She has exhibited widely throughout Scotland and abroad. Recent exhibitions include the Glasgow Project Room; the Kunstlerhaus, Dortmund; the Waygood Gallery, Newcastle and the Crawford Gallery, Cork, Ireland.
