CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS – Exhibition Border Conditions @ 66 East
66 East’s next (5th) exhibition, scheduled to open October 29th, will be concerned with presenting artistic approaches, analyses and research on ‘Border Conditions’. This exhibition will focus on two issues regarding the notion of ‘border(s)’:
(1)Urban Transition Areas. In contemporary cities, the influence of ethnical, economical, racial, nationalist and/or religiousconflictsbetween social groups on the development of a city (Belfast,Jerusalem,Sarajevo,Nicosia,Johannesburg, etc.), have reactivated the discourse on the problem of identity. The (re-)claiming of territorial identity by these groups is in complete contrast to the more generic urban developments caused by processes of globalisation. This exhibition will show examples of these areas of conflict in contemporary societies where the built environment is no longer a clear reflection of social structures.
(2)Marginal Urban Areas. Alongside these developments, the main characteristics of urban border-zones, as they are part of specific urban programs (Rotterdam,Antwerp, Marseille, etc.), show a remarkable tension between large-scale economic developments and more ‘marginal’ urban developments and events. For example, former harbour sites and industrial areas have, for decades already, brought to life and given place to a wide variety of urban cultures. For this exhibition, 66 East intends to show some examples of these places and cultures.
The 66 East- Centre for Urban Culture organisation is still looking for good artistic works for the Border Conditions exhibition. 66 East is forwarding this call for submission to anyone able to contribute to the specific topics mentioned. Deadline for submission of proposal of work: September 21st. Submission should include JPEGs and a concise text describing the interests of the work.
