Any recent *release* should work. trunk is sometimes
broken.

Depends on your local network. A /24 is usually ok
for home use. A DHCP module is on the wish list.

Jens has an interesting approach to switch between
serial and network IO. He uses a timer interrupt for
that (timer0).

A simpler start is a stpid ping. My system got a round trip
time around 25ms.
