Voice packages are transmitted together with data packages via Internet. So, if your internet connection is free, the PC-to-PC call is free as well. If you use PC-to-Phone, you need to pay some fee, i.e. SkypeOut. But it is cheaper than IDD, i.e. 1/10 of IDD.

 

Now, many companies are offering PC-to-Phone service, i.e. Yahoo [Yahoo1 Messenger], Skype, etc. Skype has good voice quality. I use this award winning device to make calls. It has excellent voice quality. In fact, I bought two units. One for me and one for my wife. :>

I was curious just what must be done to set up an internet phone?
Is there a charge? Does it work like the home phone and we pay long
distance charges? Is there any special software that must be used? I
have tried talking in a microphone on my computer but that was very
poor quality and distorted at times and also a few years ago.
