Fred: you are absolutely right.  And I have no intention of writing a book.
However, one who considers it has to value their time (as well as the
factors you mention) to determine if the effort "pays off", whether in
monetary terms or otherwise.  Not everyone can nor should apply your
altruistic yardstick to the decision of how to spend ones time.  I would
venture to say that were you 20 or more years younger (with the same
skills), you might have approached differently the decision on whether to
make IO free or even do it.

Consulting time in this field typically goes for $300+ an hour ... On that
basis if I thought I could sell 1000 copies of IO i.e. ~1/5th the AB users
and I wanted to paid for the development effort spent that would bring the
price tag to around $1000 a copy ... Given that TJ has probably spent 5-10
times that amount of time working on AB and has 5-10 times the users that
should bring its price tage to the same neighborhood.

Maybe as a yardstick for the decision making process you could better use a
scale to weigh what contributions you've already received versus the
contributions you've already made ...
