financial time series. BarCount etc. is typical for AB. I am just talking about 
an array being created in AFL without the AB environment ...

  The problem is the opposite, when the chart has less bars than the
  array size you need.

  This is easily fixed in a backtest or exploration though by testing
  BarCount before referencing the array, and not referencing it if
  BarCount is too small.
