Dave,

I used to go down the same path you are going down now; and also with a little
help from S&C. I have since learned that you need to adopt an indicator and
exclusively use it until you become thoroughly become familiar with it and how
it behaves with the character of the market. Maybe you might want a couple of
volume indicators - one to use with trending markets and one to use with
congested markets.

What volume indicator to use when there are do many out there? Well a
suggestion is to use the one that has stood up to the test of time like OBV.

Me - I personally use Twiggs Money Flow Indicator and Wordens Time Segmented
Volume and that's it. Hope this helps.

Mike

Ara,

I sure would like to find something a little more
consistent than just the eyeball and OBV and perhaps an EMA band.
Perhaps and actually, I believe I haven't found the correct rules to keep
me outa trouble. Quick count in my AB formulas shows 14 volume indicators, give
or take. They usually come about from S&C or some other journal we
use. I put em to work for a bit, scratch my head a bit, crunch it on my
favorites a bit and conclude I might as well through darts. And once the
indicator is published, that's it. Never heard from again. No sustaining
interest.

I can be way off base here. But for swing trading,
I'd sure like to be enlightened.

Thanks

Dave

it. If you need it let me know. I remember playing
  with it at the
time with little success. Volume never seems to follow the
  rules well
enough to allow decent or consistent or objective use...at
  least for
me in the medium term. And there is yet another short term
  indicator
featured in latest S&C,Nov 2007, "Short-Term Volume and
  price
Oscillator". Article's presentation leaves something to be desired

but it is another way of looking at the subject.

  But I
think Mr Dormeier likes to use the ADX, DI+, and DI- with shorter

periods for the VCPI. I think he told our investor club it works
well
  with ETFs.

Hello
  Ara,

I don't expect to see it the reason being that volume for any bar
  is
only a summary and we don't know where that volume went at an
  intra-
bar level. So far I haven't had any success with vol, although I

haven't put my heart and soul into it.

My next step in that area is
to try to use tick volume/time period.
My instinct is that if any value can
come from vol it would be at
that
  level.

Cheers,

Brian_z
