You may be referring to "Anti-Viruses impact your system" which TJ
posted on July 2, 2008. He includes a link to some AV testing that was
done in September of 2006. I would guess that most AV software has
changed considerably (for better or worse) in the last two years.
BTW, I was using AVG7, paid version, for the last two years.
The last year of 7.5 was very frustrating for me. It seemed that almost
every time AVG7.5 did an update, I had to reboot -- what a pain. In the
last 3 months of AVG, I updated to 8.0. That was a real cpu hog (on my
computer). I also had SpySweeper and SpamPal running at the same time
(so maybe it was some interaction between all three that was slowing
things down -- I don't know and really don't have the time to do all the
testing required to chase it all down).
Recently I tried avast!, and after about a month, switched from the
limited time demo to the paid edition. I've noticed a significant
improvement in performance since.
BTW2, I'm not at all that sensitive to the last 10% in performance. I'm
presently running a P4 at 2.6MHz, after switching from one at 3.0MHz.
What's a lousy 0.4MHz between friends, anyway.

Hi,
In one of his messages, TJ has given a detailed analysis of
performance of various anti virus programs with respect to time taken
for each process. He has shown that Norton anti virus program takes
more time (and hence machine gets slower) compared to other programs.
I am not able to get hold of that msg since yahoo group search engine
always reports "server busy" error and i am not able to see the message.
Can TJ or anybody has any pointer to the msg. Thanks in advance
