If you have a legal copy of Windows XP you can download "Windows Defender" - an antivirus program from Microsoft.
You can turn off real time checking, and if your update settings are correct, it automatically downloads new virus patterns. It is free - just download it It comes already installed in Vista. You have to go into Vista and turn off the real time part. Having the RT part turned off helps Vista performance considerably.
