I've used APC supplies for years. Always satisfied. I wouldn't use anything else (I'm a very loyal customer until something goes wrong -- but one strike and your out).
Go to http://www.apc.com/index.cfm
and look for "Help me choose" on left side of page.
To reduce power requirements, if using a laptop, keep cover closed to keep display off. If desktop, turn off monitor or unplug from UPS.

My optimizations run for about 2 weeks. A power failure means restarting the optimization from the beginning. It doesn't happen very often, maybe 2 or 3 times each year, but often enough I will like to buy a UPS to prevent the time loss.

Two questions:

Can anyone suggest a good UPS product?

Since the optimization puts a heavy load on the computer, I'm wondering if there is a technology to put the computer into a low-power consumption mode during the power outage. I don't mind if it slows down considerably. If it matters, it is an Intel Desktop Motherboard with a core 2 duo processor.

Thanks,
Steve
