This happens to me all the time when the formula is also running (if
it is a somewhat slow one). It seems that an AFL formula has to get
to the end of a cycle before the editor window focus is active for
editing --that is just a guess on my part. Since I am always running
the formula when editing the formula (just the way I work to catch
typos quickly), this AB feature has been my constant companion for
years. I never thought twice about it. ;)
