I am not the full bottle on this because I seldom us PlotShapes but since no 
one else answers.

PS works anytime if you overlay.
It doesn't require that the variables are Buy/Sell

Yesterday I used (apdapted from the AB help manual)

shape = PL* shapeUpArrow + PH * shapeDownArrow;
PlotShapes( shape, IIf( PL, colorGreen, colorRed ), PH, IIf( PL, Low, High ) );

On the other hand:

Last time I wanted to see arrows on the chart,for Buy/Sell signals,I had to run 
a scan first ... AB them auto shows the BuySell arrows after the scan (or 
backtest) as long as "show trading arrows" is selected in the chart parameters 
(I think this should be the default anyway) .... right click in AA results list 
to select the option of "show arrows" etc i.e. buy/sell arrows integrated with 
AA works in a different way to PlotShapes function?
