BJ (WB5PKD) and I have recently acquired a Ampex studio Reel to Reel tape recorder Model AG-440-2 (two track .25 in) http://recordist.com/ampex/docs/apxbrochures/ag440/ag-440.pdf and the pinch roller rubber has turned to GOO. There is a replacement available for $85.00. I though I would have a heart attack! So we decided that we might try to remold, recap, or otherwise make a big mess in the kitchen trying to rebuild this pinch roller. Any body got any ideas as to where to start and most important is there any liquid rubber or synthetic that we should look for.
