Jim:

As I said, I have two 5100Bs and really like them both. There was a
discussion here recently about them along with other transmitters, I
don't know if you saw it or not.

Too bad about the shipping damage. I know it will be costly but
worth it, Note that the 5100B modulator section has a couplate in
it. I have removed it from one of mine and opened up the low end a
bit. Not much because of the size of the mod transformer, but some,
and I agree that stock, I get better reports from it than any
Johnson rig I ever owned.

The dials on mine are showing their age and I have thought about
replacing them, but have been too lazy to take them out and do the
work. I don't have a scanner on my computer, so I would have to pay
someone to do the work. Are you going to do it, or have someone
else make them? If you have someone else, I would contribute and
get two for myself.

One of these is a 9 and the other is a 9+ and I guard them
carefully. On the 6100, it was designed for SSB and does not have
good AM audio quality. Had a friend that had one and he sold it
because of that. The 6100 and NC 303 will make a great vintage SSB
rig. I have noticed that the VFOs in the 5100 is very stable. That
is because of the way they do things.

Anyway, just musing. Keep us updated on how the metal work goes and
when we can expect to hear the 5100 playing again.
