I don't know. How could such riff-raff sneak in and get voice priv's
on HF? Hmm.. OK don't get mad, just kidding!!

With a guy like that, who has invested alot of money in a plastic
riceburner, and thinks he has got some real fine radio, you just can't
argue with them. After all, you are running a piece of junk, in his
mind. Those of us with some experience know why the RF preamplifiers
are either tuned, built to withstand high signal levels, or have
preselectors in 'good' radios. We understand what happens when a
manufacturer plops a mixer right after a 20dB wideband RF preamp, and
operates the thing off of 5 volts. Your neighbor just dropped his $1k
into the salesman's pocket, and thinks that got him a good receiver.

I bet if you cranked up the SSB, he'd still rant about it.

for receiving:

(my) selective radios:
Racal RA-6217E (preselector)
AN/GRC-106 (RF amps tuned)
Hallicrafters SX-28 (RF amps tuned))
R-392 (RF amps tuned)
Sunair GSB-900DX (? but does not overload easily)

(my) unselective radios:
radio shack DX-392 (awful overload)
Kenwood R-1000 (I hate to say it, but it's only 'fair')
various CB radios
The jury is still out on the Alinco DX-70, but I suspect it would
behave like your bad neighbor's set.

This reminds me of when I lived at another QTH (about 1984) and a
fellow ham
lived about 2 houses away in a residential neighborhood. I ran AM on
3880 with a
GK-500B, SP-600, and he ran SSB on 3910 with a rice box. When he was
on the air,
my SP-600 would de-sense a bit, but it was tolerable. When I keyed up
the 500B,
his receiver went into overload (no front end selectivity), and it
didn't matter
where his dial was set as I was there loud, and distorted. My
"perceived"
bandwith was dc to light. The guy was a hot head, and after a brief
visit I
realized that there was no solution in the midst of threats, and
prejudices. I
on occasion would listen on 3910 after one of my "old buzzard"
transmission
(3880) from my 500B, and you would't believe the language I heard
about me, and
AM in particular. There was no reasoning with him. I wonder if the guy
who wrote
that anomalous email is my old neighbor?
