I'll echo what others have said, *please* don't change the list. If you think you have headaches now...

As far as the failed accounts problem, why not just make up a generic email stating what the problem is, how to fix it, and how to contact you if they have questions, then just unsubscribe any 'problem' accounts that may arise as a result? I'm guessing that the list software would allow you to turn off the rejected posts so you don't have to be annoyed by them. While your desire is to to the right and best thing, if you act as a conduit without the posters realizing their mistake or account problem, it'll only continue. Come to think of it, I've gotten responses before when hitting 'reply all' and one of the addresses happened to be a list I wasn't subscribed to. The return message informed me that I could not post to a list that I wasn't subscribed to, etc. If this software has that feature, why not just turn it on and let those who post incorrectly figure it out? If it doesn't have the feature, well...it should! (o:

Others are right - you don't want the free-for-all of just random posts and problems created by the idiots and script kiddies. The list really *is* open, afterall. It's not moderated, and all one needs to do to use it is subscribe. If people are too lazy or incapable of meeting this one, simple requirement (but are capable of using a computer and the internet), would you really want them here?
