CW is in wide use as a hobby. My friend W5FRS uses it almost
exclusively and builds his own neo-vintage gear, but has gotten an
interest in AM recently. Since I'm a tube audio enthusiast he asked me
to help him modulate his 250TH amplifier.

His stuff: http://208.190.133.201/w5frs/W5FRS_Homebrews.html

I'm a technician licensee.
I built the cathode modulator system for my friend's CW rig. And
talked on that rig. Everyone gives the thumbs up on the audio quality.
They should, as it is flat +/- 1dB from 100-7000 Hz (before the EQ to
limit the bandwidth) and linear enough at 93% modulation that a
triangle wave at the mod. input and the resulting signal at the RX
detector, when adjusted for relative amplitudes and then subtracted,
has less than 1% error. so much for technical types. tweek tweek
tweek..

So, during the week, he does alot of CW, and weekends too. So there is
plenty of it out there. But on the weekends, ahh the saturdays.. the
AM suff is where our fun begins. I still need to convince him to get a
modulation scope and a signal generator and tweek for linearity when
tuning, but that's just my fanaticism, and it's close enough for
gummint work without it.

If y'all have read my posts, you know what I am restoring. I would
like to put it on the air, but no Morse code for me, I have explained
why before. The dummy load will do for my endless tweeking and
geeking, or my friend can come over and we can use the rig on the air.
I've done some other AM-related stuff, mostly regarding modulators.
Custom-made is my pleasure. Audio is my pleasure. High powered tube
equipment is my pleasure. RF is one way to enjoy the high power stuff,
without having to go deaf blowing speakers, as one might with a 500W
or 1000W audio amp. But that's just the hobby.

At the risk of being W0YR'd again, I'll have to say that I would bring
more value to HF as in 'the service', and I would not mind a more
difficult written exam -in lieu of Morse code. The general class
written test is easy for me WRT the technical aspects IMHO.

... Yet for the TECHNICIANS in that Hobby there are grillions of ways
to enjoy it and NEVER GET your name up in lights! YET if you talk to
those
Technicians, you might just find that 7 out of the TOP 10 in that
hobby are
using his custom made product!...
