Hi Dave, This scam has been around for some time and is just that, a scam. The mail usually says that they are in a hurry to get the money for what ever reason. The victim, being a nice person, deposits the check and forwards the remainder. Then the check bounces and the victim is out the cash and the equipment.
This same scam is used with money orders and occasionally a cashier's check. make it a practice to NEVER pass on cash from a deal like this. You WILL GET BURNED! Always wait for personal checks, cashiers checks and MOs to clear before sending your gear. State that when you sell on an auction site, too, so there will never be a question. The only safe wat to release your gear immediately is cash, credit card payment from an on line company or USPS MOs, which so faer, have not been successfully counterfeited. 73, John, W4AWM
