Howdy KA5MIR: Yes, I have done the same thing you describe a hundred times, just in case the band is open. I did learn years ago that the MUF on 10 meters is rather sharp. I have heard stations on 28-28.5 MHz 5x9+ and could not hear a peep on 29.0-29.1 or 29.6-29.7 . I have also heard ststions on CB and found 10 meters wide open, so always best to check.
