With experience one can see pretty much everything you need to watch on a 
regular envelope pattern (RF on the vertical input and sweep set low).  But I 
do 
sometimes like to run RF to the both X and the Y axes of a scope and watch the 
doughnut envelope shape that is produced.  100 % negative is the closing of 
the eye in the center.  That display is especially helpful to see the effects 
of audio processing - brightened regions correspond to limiting action.
