You can also buy this stuff in camping stores, as tent repair thread. I got two or three rolls a few years ago for a couple bucks each, not "vintage" new-old-stock or whatever, but perfectly suitable to a harness I was doing up for an old broadcast mixing console.
It consists of several cotton threads, not braided, but held by the wax to about the diameter of, oh say, a fishing line of 20# test monofilament.
