Don K4KYV said -- Controlled carrier AM reduces the duty cycle demand on the amplifier.
Of course this is true, but attention needs to be paid to the loss of carrier's value as part of the wholesome AM experience. The carrier is an essential part of AM, providing a great deal of information in a function overlooked by proponents of incomplete modes like SSB. The carrier provides a form of conversational punctuation, alerting those listening to the transmission that the person continues to form a thought which is about to be expressed. The carrier also provides technical cues contained in a wholesome AM signal, best interpreted on receivers with a slow AGC, and often described as "quieting" on such a signal. Reducing the carrier often shortchanges the listener, and therefore is not recommended. Paul/VJB ____________________________________________________________________________________ Food fight?
