SSB with carrier can sound ok - witness CHU, if they are still on the air. But without audio processing, SSBWC will either have really low audio level, or it will frequently overmodulate, with really bad sonic effects. And conventional ALC will not help this situation significantly.
The same modulation level issue exists with low-level balanced-modulator AM transmitters. This is why simple plate-modulated transmitters usually sound better - they naturally limit modulating audio, and they can not produce inverted carrier polarity on negative peaks, which produces even more distortion on an envelope detector. Proper audio processing can eliminate the overmodulation issue. But to my ear, SSBWC still sounds worse in selective fading. The receiving stations also lose the option of listening on whichever sideband has the least interference.
