Hi John,

I'm planning to attend and am looking forward to it. Tnx for the
warning on being early.

Perhaps they don't -want- to.

They've got some pretty strict (and justifiable) requirements.

If the VFO has a coupling cap, tie the VFO output directly to the grid

of the buffer and see what happens. If you don't have enough then, move
back to the grid of the Osc. Just be careful of driving the Osc too
strongly.

Jim/W5JO

In my Gates BC1-T I modified the 12BY7 xtal oscillator and converted it to a grounded-grid buffer. Simple - bypass the grid to ground with a .005 or .01 mfd capacitor. The cathode already has an rf choke to ground, and the xtal
feedback circuit connects to the cathode through a capacitor. Disconnect
the feedback lead, and replace it with a .01 capacitor, and use that
capacitor to couple the rf from the outboard vfo directly to the cathode of
the stage.

That makes it very easy to convert back to stock if desired. The vfo outut
needs to be low impedance. Mine measures about 1/4 watt into a 50-ohm
resistor dummy load. That drives the 12BY7 perfectly.

I use a similar scheme with the same vfo to drive the homebrew rig, to feed
the type 59 input stage. I have it wired to automatically convert to the
conventional pentode xtal oscillator circuit with the vfo plug removed plus
one jumper connection.

VFO's like the 122 and VF-1 are high-z output, directly from the plate of
the oscillator tube. You would need to add an additional stage to boost the
power to 250mw at low-Z. An untuned cathode follower stage might do the
trick.

I use a highly modified T-368 master oscillator unit as my VFO. The type
6000 tube was replaced with a 6AG7 (socket rewiring required), with about
200 volts on the plate. A coupling link was added to each of the slug tuned
output coils. That required modification of the bandswitch, with the
addition of another wafer section. The addition of the cupling coil
affected the tuning linearity of output stage somewhat, but it still gives
pefectly uniform output across each ham band, which is all that counts, but
the output drops off at the unused frequencies at extreme ends of each
tuning range. The stock unit delivered uniform output from 1.5 through
about 20 mHz, directly into the grid of the 4-250.

My vfo is connected to the transmitter through a RG-59 coax line. I have
used as much as 15' of cable. You can't do that with a stock 122 or VF-1.
If the vfo cable is more than a few feet long, you lose output. The output
circuit has a slug-tuned coil at the plate, which feeds through a coupling
capacitor to the coax line feeding the transmitter. The capacitance of the coax line resonates with the coil to form a broadly resonant circuit to feed the grid of the 1st stage in the t ransmitter. If the coax is too long, it
won't hit resonance. I once used a VF-1, and tried replacing the output
coil with one that would resonate with a long run of coax, but it tuned too
sharply, and wouldn't supply full grid drive across the entire band.

Didn't he collaborate with another ham from NC ad write an article, or maybe
a series of articles a couple of decades ago about ground radials? If
that's who it is, I have worked him over the air many times.

I just wish the AWA meet weren't so far away. I've never been to one - just too many miles to drive for a swapmeet, and no-one around here is interested
in teaming up for the trip.

I did attend the Rochester hamfest a couple of times when I lived in
Massachussetts, back in the 70's. It was great for just the kind of stuff I look for, but like all other hamfests, that has no doubt changed by now.

I remember one year, when I did not attend, NY state tax agents came on
site and closed the entire flea market down because some kind of paper work
had not been submitted in proper form. I'm surprised it didn't incite a
riot.

Our local hamfests ban computer scrap entirely. No computer items allowed
whatsoever. Anyone found selling computer debris is escorted off the
property. Has worked brilliantly for he last 5 years. It a pleasure and
a
blessing to only find proper radio stuff at local festers.

Ed, VA3ES

Just about as annoying at hamfests is the non-radio related arts 'n crafts
junk. I have seen some hamfests that were more like a general fleamarket,
with jewellery, paintings and drawings, dolls, etc. in addition to all the
computer scrap. If you looked hard enough you might find a little radio
stuff scattered in between.

One of the most pleasant hamfest flea markets I ever remember was in the
early 80's at Chattanooga, TN. It was held at the UT campus, in a parking
lot next to the cafeteria. The flea market was divided into two distinct
sections. One was for arts and crafts and other non-radio items, while the
other was strictly for radio and electronic items. There were loads of
vintage parts on display. To cap it off, there was a very mellow sounding
local rock band playing - not too loud, just right for pleasant background
music, but you could still easily talk over it. The cafeteria opened for
lunch, and they had a good menu of real food instead of the normal hamfest
slop.

Unfortunately, they held the hamfest at that venue only one year. From then
on, it became a typical indoor flea market with practically nothing of
interest to me. I attended the indoor event once and decided it was not
worth the trip.

I think the idea is to get exposure and new AWA members to a dying
organization.
Segregating AWA member/sellers to one area should be easy.

Probably the AWA doesn't want its members to have to wade through 3
aisles of computer junk just to find an antique radio seller. The nice
thing about the AWA gathering is that their buyers and sellers are
focused on a very niche time frame.

And, don't forget, there is a big hamfest in Sellersville, PA this
Sunday, 10/21. Weather forecast looks perfect.

Has anyone ever considered that our XYLs also enjoy attending hamfests.
My wife enjoys accompanying me to hamfests because of the variety of items
for sale that are non-ham related. Many ladies, as you know, are not
interested in rummaging through a box of old tubes or drooling over some old
boatanchor. If you don't care to look at computer equipment, etc., then
walk on but please don't put a sign up at the gate restricting sales to ham
gear exclusively.
