Some of us were around in the late 50's when SSB took hold. In the late 50's AM was the mainstream PHONE mode. You had to have deep pockets to by a SSB rig, Most average hams in that period had to HB a rig if they wanted to operate SSB. Take a look at the SSB projects in the late 50's and early 60's handbooks.
One cheap alternative was the ARC-5 DSB/SC conversion. THat gave you part of the benifits of SSB at a lower cost. One of the primary thing that caused SSB to take over as the main mode of phone operation was the hetrodyning caused by AM when the bands were busy. And in 1957 and 58 the bands were very busy every night! And at times they were very noisy. SSB solved 2 problems. A given QSO only took 1/2 the space and the hetrodynes were eliminated. Unless the bands are very crowed, AM at 6KHz (KC/S) is really not a problem.
