That was during the largest recorded sunspot cycle. Guys on 6 meters were working all over the country and even worldwide although there weren't that many countries that had lots of 6 meter privileges. AM was still the predominant mode on 6 although there were a few that were dabbling in DSB. This period, and 6 meters, is what sparked my interest in amateur radio.
