The spacing isn't critical, and the impedence change between 4" and 6" spacing isn't very much. I use #10 wire with 2" spacing on mine. I chose that spacing because that's the length of the E F Johnson ceramic spacers I had on hand at the time. I wouldn't recommend anything greater than 6" for frequencies above 30 mc/s, though, because the spacing begins to become more than a negligible fraction of a wavelength, causing the line to mimic two closely spaced elements, and radiate.
