This anti-AM attitude is a hold over from CB, where sidebanders disdain
AM.
If they're complaining about AM'ers, or insulting them, then you know
where
they've come from.

That's partly true, but there are still some now old-time hams who were
young studs on the air about the time the hard-sell SSB propaganda campaign
was in full swing in the 1955-69 era, and they swallowed it hook, line and
sinker. They became arrogantly anti-AM then and remain so to this day.
The anti-AM crowd is a combination of both groups.
