Whenever I ship something really valuable via UPS, I take pictures of the item, both before and after packing, and I mail them to myself as postcards. It's cheap insurance.

You must also take care to use a new, properly taped box and adequate impact-absorbing material: UPS and other carriers love to wriggle out of paying based on "old box" or "inadequate packing" claims.

Sorry to say that Small Claims isn't the first avenue I'd take on a claim: in Massachusetts, it costs about $75 *just to file a claim*, so that eliminates most small items right at the start. For larger items, consider insuring with a separate agency and professional crating.

FWIW. YMMV.

The only way to get any satisfaction out of UPS is to file a claim against them in small claims court. With the proper photos and testimony via a notarized letter from the seller that the item was 100% when it was shipped, you will win a judgement nearly every time. Many times, UPS will pay upon receipt of the notice from the court that they are being sued. It is not worth their time to try to defend a suit for a few hundred dollars.

Their whole idea is to make trying to collect from them so much trouble that the average individual will eventually just eat his loss and go away. A letter from the court gets their attention. Remember...Document Everything Well.
