There is another subtle advantage to using an SSB generator to generate AM. Assuming that the AM is generated using a (unbalanced) balanced modulator, overdriving the system with slightly excess audio does not generate the horrible splatter that results from overmodulating the usual "plate modulated" kind of transmitter.
