About the use of a linear on AM . . .
Years ago Continental Electronics in Dallas had a series of
screen-modulated AM broadcast transmitters. Their audio
quality was very good but their efficiency was absolutely
terrible. One of the sales guys said that the only way to
run those rigs was to either modulate heck out of them or
else to shut them off. Under unmodulated conditions the
plate dissipation was at a maximum.
