Some time back I was advised not to use the 110VAC on the mode switch to
activate a T/R relay.

How should one do it? I could make an adapter that used the switched 110VAC at
low current through an optical isolator to activate the relay. Would that be
better than using the mode switch directly?

Replacing the switch is not a desirable thing to have to do.
