Did you take the guts from an AA 5 and just move it up?

That's the idea, with a few mods such as pulling plates and a series cap to get a better tuning bandspread. I wanted the antenna tracking to still work so I wouldn't need a front panel antenna trimmer control - that seemed challenging. But as I removed plates from the antenna section of the cap, and turns from the antenna coi, I got to a point where the parallel trimmer dominated at one end of the band, and the variable cap at the other, causing a broad double-humped response on the antenna peaking that worked out well for the 1800 and 1900 kHz sections of the band.

What a great idea.

I think I have one here that would make a great candidate for
such a project too... a friend of mine gave it to me a few
months back but I am not sure what tubes / circuitry it has.

Love the dial and the perf metal!

My 160m AM receiver project is done. It was based on parts from a
Zenith 5-tube broadcast radio (actually the same model as our family
kitchen table radio when I was a little kid) but I pulled variable
cap
plates and
added a few parts to move it up to 160m and create a better
band-spread
across the dial. I was also able to get a double-humped response on
the
antenna tracking and avoid the need for a front panel antenna trimmer
control.

The picture of the front panel was snapped at the moment it was
receiving
one of the crew on 1985 kHz. The signal was about S9+15dB on my other
receivers.
