Have you tried using Windows Explorer and putting ftp://bama.sbc.edu/ in the address bar?
Internet Explorer will let you read, but in Windows Explorer you can use copy/paste. Works here under XP. That's how I've been moving stuff to and from my site. Robert A. Poff Loganville, PA.
