In it is the well-known 618T (RT 698/ARC-102); a 426T-1 inverter, and a 700B-2 TTY converter. Al this is in a big green submersible case/cabinet, with a 313V-1 control head. The whole thing is: Reciever Transmitter Group 718F-1 I'm not a GreenRadio collector, but I am sort-of-basically familiar with the 618T, and somewhere I have the docs on the 700B. I'd like to have any thoughts, wisdom, cautions, etc about the radio and it's components... I'm thinking it might be fun to put it on the air, as several articles call out the good audio quality, both SSB and AM, and of course it's 400W PEP. I have no idea yet what to do with the lovely vehicle case... not planning on doing any off-road DXpeditions anytime soon. hihi.. I'd welcome any and all comments on this radio, on the list or privately. I don't know much about the system as a whole. I'll post this to the Boatanchors list as well - but I'm not all that keen on subscribing to any mil- or green- radio lists, too much in my inbox as it is. If you'd like to crosspost this to one of those, please do - but direct replies to me personally. I'm looking for the VFO/Crystal switch (SW2 - P/N 22.1989) and the Mode switch (SW4 - P/N 22.1295-2). My old Valiant was acquired a couple of years ago from a local CB-er and was aggressively "modified" (meaning wrecked). I've found most of the parts I need to get the transmitter back on the air (even stumbled onto a few of the Johnson-style terminal strips), but I need both switches to complete the project. If you have either or both of these switches, please let me know! Please note that these switches are NOT the same as the corresponding switches on a Valiant I. They have extra contacts which are used when the transmitter is connected to a SSB adapter. Although the original Valiant I has a "SSB" position on the "Mode" switch, the switch does NOT have the same contact configuration as the Valiant II switch. Thanks! (o: Gary had done a beautiful rewind job on the modulation transformer for my KW-1, mounted it on a board, and double boxed it with foam packing between the layers. Far from being a massive, heavy box, it weighed in at roughly 40-45 lbs. It had to travel only 200 miles or so from his place in Maine to mine in VT, yet when it arrived, it looked more like a soccer ball than a box. No corners left, black with scuffs and dirt, and a large hole gouged in the side. Turned out that there was no visible damage through the hole but once I got it unpacked, one of the cast iron frames was snapped from a sharp impact and several studs were bent (no insulators broken, amazingly). Gary and I had a bit of a time getting them to pay for it also, but they finally did. The only reason was that I found an old (2004) Peter Dahl price list online and provided it to them along with plenty of photos of the damaged box and transformer. That is what they refunded. Had I not been able to provide that, I'm not sure how much, if any, would've been refunded. That's the problem with old relics, it's difficult to establish a value in their eyes. If you claim it's an antique, you can bet they'll deny your claim if you didn't describe it as such and pay additional fees. Otherwise it's obsolete and has no value. Fortunately I was driving up to northern Maine the later to pick up a nice ATC and brought the damaged iron with me to Gary's shop. He tested it out, all was well. He then removed the frame, I had it welded and ground down, shot it with some primer and sent it back to him (Priority mail). He reassembled it and hauled it to the next Hosstraders for me. Moral of the story is, as always, it matters not which shipper you use - your time will come if you ship enough stuff. I'd been moving radio gear all over the globe for more than a decade with no issues, using mainly UPS for large items and USPS Priority for smaller items. I had also used FedEx with no problems until this. Usually it's more a matter of poor packing not handling, but sometimes it's just your turn. Gary had packed the transformer very well, but apparently the crew at FedEx didn't want to handle it so they tossed it to the floor and kicked it across the place. If you keep in mind that these places are in business to make a profit which equates to throughput, not in the business of babysitting your package from point A to point B, and pack as if it's being sent from the back hills of China to you, you'll greatly minimize the possibility of damage. But when it's your turn, all the packing in the world won't help. A forklift through the side, dropped off a ship, whatever. It's just a matter of time... ~ Todd, KA1KAQ/4 BTW - I've still had nothing damaged by UPS despite the horror stories others can relate. Which no doubt means I'm due there, too! ------------------------------ Message: 8 Date: Mon, 16 Nov 2009 07:31:44 -0800 (PST) From: Mark Foltarz <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [AMRadio] Add FedEx ground to the bum list To: Discussion of AM Radio in the Amateur Service <[email protected]> Message-ID: <[email protected]> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Well.... ?? First, take pictures of the item before you pack and keep in case some thing happens. If you show them the item picture and packing then they cannot claim bad condition before pickup. Second, establish value through any means you can. One thing that has worked for me in the past is find a person who is an appraiser (antique appraiser who just happened to be the wife of a ham friend). With good pictures and value information you find on the web that tells them how much the equipment has sold for, (even at auction), then they will give you a written appraisal that is near what it costs to replace. Armed with this you can confront any shipper. Remember when you buy coverage from any shipper, it is not "insurance" in the traditional way. It is merely contents coverage and the shipping company is providing basic coverage by the pound. If you add to this, the coverage amount is raised but the rules are the same. There are companies out there that insure contents that are carried by common carrier and their costs is very reasonable, in most cases less then the carrier coverage. These companies don't argue nearly as much as the carrier themselves. Ask any pack and ship shop who they use, most do not rely on UPS or FEDEX nor the USPS to pay.
