Doesn't HRD support remote control of a radio via RPC or some similar
mechanism? Wouldn't be too hard to write a program that controlled the radio
via that interface, shielding HRD from the rig's limited command set.

I wrote a program to control the radio a while ago, it was pretty easy to do. I
never got around to implementing some of the features I planned (interface to
Predict, GUI, etc) but as it is, it can set mode and frequency, automatically
track an FM downlink using the discriminator meter, and send and receive AQS
messages (on the odd chance I ever find someone with another 736). All done in
175 lines of Python.
