Lets look at AO-7
Old technology still works except period of time (long ...) when chemical 
battery was short circuit.
I think that new projects were and are too complicated. Too many devices in 
limited space of space-craft, too many experiments.
Maybe if more attention has been focused on critical parts ... sorry I am 
not an expert but it is my opinion - simpler but more heavy duty, more 
resistant on high overload during lift.
