Robert, typical 9600 packet sounds like "shhhhhhhh". In some cases, it makes the static background quiet--rather than seeming to make much of a noise.
Your ear won't be able to tell GMSK from FSK...most modems can't tell the difference either :) I've never heard 9600 that sounded like 1200...
