Why, Kevin?  Things get messed up all the time.  Suitsat had problems, but
still caused a stirr.  Hubble went up with a screwed up mirror, but it was
fix.  The second ALSEP package on the moon was at least mostly destroyed
when an astronaut stumbled and ripped out the ribbon cable connecting
parts together.

Things Happen.  It isn't pathetic, it just happens.  Could things be 
improved?
Absolutely!

But consider this: where would the ISS be if it was run the way the US 
congress
has been acting lately?

At the bottom of an ocean, I'd say...
