You clearly don't understand open source. Is the Apache http server "hacked up beyond recognition"? I suspect hams keeping their source closed is far more about ego than the sanctity of the code base.
As someone else said though, I respect any authors decision to keep their source closed. It is their IP. I just don't agree with it.
