Great stuff there, really! that's what I was talking about with Karel on

I think your mockup looks really great! but is it possible with Tcl ? Or
is it possible with one of your mega widgets? would speed be an issue ?

It can easily be done with Tkhtml (very fast in my experience) , in fact I wrote the html fiel today and it looks great :) If only my tk had aa fonts
hehe!

ouhh yeah, right TkHtml.. I like that, even if I don't like amsn's code to become html.. makes me kind of think that we're writing an amsn in php :p

I think we should copy MSN messenger's GUI.. don't forget our first and
primary catch phrase.. "amsn, with msn's messenger look and feel" and it
was in order for our users to use amsn and feel like they were still using
msn messenger... a real clone... now msn messenger improved a lot, but
amsn kept his msn 4.0 look and feel as Alberto said.

Okay, I sort of agree here and sort of don't. I don't want to copy msn's gui completely, we can do better than that. We should be aiming for "amsn, with msns look and feel, but better!" - for example, look at the mockup Lee sent, it's just like msn7.5 is, and look at all that goddam wasted space!!! In the
mockup I sent, we could have the remember me etc checkbuttons, and still
have room for the extra stuff (did you read the article btw? or jsut look at the pretty pic :P cause I explained why it's good to have that extra stuff
there..)

Quoting you from second email (makes it easier to answer) :
"I just thought of a good way to explain what I meant by that sentence ^^^. We want people who've just switched from windows to be able to recognise how to sue it because it's similar to msn, but we also want linux newbies and dumbass teenagers to be able to use it AND we want power users not to get anoyed by a really inefficient (sometimes horribly cluttered, sometimes far to bare and space-wasting) interface."

I think we're fully in sync here, I never said "I want amsn to be the exact copy of MSN 7.5", I said that we need to keep the same look and feel.. what you say here is totally true, we can have what you had in that mockup in the wiki but add the remember me options.. and NO, I DID read the text, not only saw the pic :p (which is indeed pretty ;)) you just need to watch out for something : low res screens or resized to low res windows... elements might need to be removed, or those 2 things in the bottom of the main window might be expanded/collapsed and they would be collapsed if the window is too small to contain them. I think that you can put whatever you want in the main window as long as we get rid of those "Create profile" use existing profile.. stuff.. ;) in your design, if you want to include the remember me option, try to think of the behavior we get when chekcing/unchecking it.. I think if you uncheck it, a popup should say "do you want me to forget about [EMAIL PROTECTED] ? you will loose all your settings and chat logs if any..." maybe have an option to keep those config/logs but only remove the profile from the combobox... that's what I would call a full design! :D

One of the nicest thing I see in msn messenger and feel like amsn should
also have is the login screen embeded in the main window, have a 'remember
me', 'remember password' and 'sign me in automatically' buttons...
especially the 'remember me' button, as this only one button replaces all the profiling system, connect with default profile, use existing profile, create new profile, what is a profile, etc... very very VERY confusing to
users... but 'remember me', so easy and neat! :) I think we should adapt
that...

Yepp :) I would only be coding the GUI side remember, unless I get more time and energy...so an event will jsut get sent "GuiRememberMeCheckbuttonOn" or something..... then something else will pick it up and create a profile for
that account.

humm.. think about it.. an event ? an event would be ok if it were an action, but that's an option.. so you can't do that.. being associated to a variable would be better, because when you get that event, what will you do with it ? it depends if you signed in with it or not... I prefer looking at the variable's content once the 'signIn' event is launched... also, when you have a key pressed on the username entry, a paste being done, a backspace, etc.. you need to check if the user already exists, in which case, you should set the 'remember me' option on, the 'remember my password' and the password entry accordingly... Also, one nice thing in MSN 7.5 GUI is that when you enter a mail that already exists, not only does it switch to using that profile, but it also changes the DP shown in the main window (yes, tehre is a frame with a DP on top of the username entry) to the DP you have setup for that account...
don't forget the 'login as' combobox...
ouch, it's getting crowded! :)

I think a toolbar thing would be very nice, in a chatwindow,
you'll have the toolbar and a button bar (like the current one),
difference would be actions in the toolbar (start audio, webcam, send
nudge, FT, etc..) while text specific stuff in the button bar (change
font, insert smiley, send ink, ...)

Yeah, thats what I think too. makes sense.

Tom.. keep it up:)

p.s.: we missed you :)
